LG 55LH90/ LG 47LH90 / LG 37HL90 Review
The LG 47LH90 is a high-end LCD HDTV featuring an array of LEDs which serve as the set’s backlight. While many of this set’s features are highly similar (and in some cases identical) to those of the LGLH55, certain modifications make this set a significant revamp of a previously well-reviewed model. With a stylish exterior and high picture quality, the LG 47LH90 is a definite contender for best HDTV model of the year.
My first impression of the LG 47LH90 was that its blacks were extremely dark. Shadows are highly detailed, and bright lighting in the set’s surroundings does not highly impair viewing quality. The set’s exterior is a striking black case with a clear blue trim. I feel that the aesthetic quality of a set can be very important, and the LG 47LH90 would be a welcome addition to any living room. The appearance of this set is very sophisticated, while still retaining an air of simplicity due to a lack of overbearing features on the set itself.
The picture quality is great when viewed from the front, but this set suffers from hampered quality when it is viewed from an angle. This is a problem that I’ve experienced with many other LED sets, and the LG 47LH90 is no exception. Motion blur is reduced by a rapidly flashing secondary backlight, which flickers at a rate that is imperceptible to the human eye. The LED backlight is very power-efficient—a feature heavily toted by LG.
Blooming is a highly apparent problem for the LG 47LH90, and consumers should carefully evaluate the extent to which such an issue would prove to be a disturbance for them. White objects contrasted against black ones resulted in a clouding effect surrounding the object in the foreground. Bright portions of the image being displayed will also sometimes spill over into the surrounding area.
Despite this issue, the LG 47LH90’s color accuracy and detail are still great. Flesh tones are displayed magnificently. Though colors are overall less saturated than in other sets, this proves to be a benefit in cases such as the aforementioned flesh tones, which are featured heavily throughout most films in the shape of human skin. Image consistency is also maintained despite cases of blooming, with very few distortions in a front-angle viewing.
One feature of the LG 47LH90 which I find highly commendable is the intuitive menu and remote navigation. Ratio, picture quality, sound, and color are all easily changeable with a minimal amount of effort. The physical buttons themselves are beautifully backlit and given ample space between one another. Menus are easily navigated, although some may be put off by the buttons on the remote all being shaped similarly. There is even an “energy saving” button, which gives the user direct control of the backlight’s intensity. Overall, I am very pleased with the LG 47LH90, and would recommend it to anyone looking to purchase a new HDTV.
