Sharp LC52SB55U Review, Sharp LC46SB54U Review, & Sharp LC42SB45U Review

Sharp's lineup of LCD displays recently expanded on its series of high-definition sets to its product line with the introduction of new SB line products. The series includes models available in 52" (LC-52SB55U), 46" (LC-46SB54U), and 42" (LC-42SB45U). All three are in a 1080p 1920x1080 resolution. Though very competitively and affordably priced, this lineup is ultimately quite lacking when it comes to performance against competitor's sets. The LC-52SB55U is priced at $2,299.99, the LC-46SB54U at $1,899.99, and the LC-42SB45U at $1,399.99.

The premise behind the SB series' such as the Sharp LC52B55 U are the newcomers which are offering a somewhat budget-priced HD set option to consumers. Features touted for the entry-level line of the SB budget series include a Special Contrast Engine that promises deep blacks and good image quality, as well as a 6ms pixel response and a wide viewing angle.  Built in multi-regional tuners (NTSC/ATSC/QAM) come standard, and the amount of HDMI inputs ranges from 2 on the smallest set to 4 on the largest. 2 HD component terminals are standard as well.  Every model also has a PC input so that it can serve as a computer monitor. Official information and specs for these sets make repeating references to technologies such as a "contrast ratio identifier" and a "Special Contrast Engine" in an attempt to hide their being outpaced by competitions such as Sony and Samsung.  I have no idea what these are and feel that they are little more than buzzwords

The 10k to 1 CR dynamic is very disappointing, and its limitations are even more apparent on the 8-bit models. Sharp's attempt to provide a budget line brings very little to the forefront of the LCD HD market, which is a sad state of affairs due to their original pioneering of the LCD display industry. I would have to recommend going with Samsung's budget line over this series, as the quality of their lower-priced offerings is much greater than anything offered by Sharp in their budget line.
