Sony Bravia KDL-46XBR3 Review

(MSRP $5,300)

Sony has just introduced a new generation of Bravia LCD TV panels with a native 1920 x 1080 resolution. This 46-inch model (the Sony Bravia KDL-46XBR3) is Sony’s top of the line XBR series. What makes these new models of XBR’s so special is their new design which distinctly says that you want the most fashionable LCD’s out in the market.  The bezel of the Bravia KDL-46XBR3's frame is a piano black color, which is most coveted by LCD consumers. Sony has gone one step further and made a floating glass-encased screen on top of the LCD unit. This is not the first time that Sony has done this, as they've done this before with their plasmas a couple years back.  Sony no longer make plasmas screen TV sets now and have decided to concentrate on the LCD market. With LCD TV's like the Sony Bravia KDL-46XBR3, we're all glad they did!

The price tag of these new XBR’s is typical of the Sony pricing.  Other competitive LCD models are the Sharp 45 inch or even the Samsung LCD models.  The XBR’s come with the new Bravia Engine Pro full digital HD video which is Sony’s video processing system.  In layman’s term, the video processing system is trying to produce better motion video so you do not see the artifacts in your picture.  Usually the plasma screens show better motion, ie. Sports, than LCD screens.  The new processing systems are closing the gap on the difference in technology between LCD’s (such as this Sony Bravia KDL-46XBR3) and plasmas.

The Sony KDL-46XBR3 has the following key features:

  1. Resolution 1920 x 1080
  2. 1080P resolution via HDMI input
  3. Bravia Engine Pro
  4. Built in ATSC Tuner
  5. One 3 video and three component inputs
  6. Three HDMI inputs
  7. Wide color gamut backlight

If you want the best of the best LCD units out there, Sony is the brand name to have. The Sony KDL-46XBR3 may be pricey, but it is meant for people who want a great picture with good brightness. If the colors of the black gloss unit and less HDMI inputs are not big on your list, you may consider dropping down to the Sony XBR 2 Series. For those who can afford this model, the Sony KDL-46XBR3 will not disapoint.
