Sony KDL-52XBR5 Review

Fall of 2007 has brought the new editions of Sony’s high-end XBR brand LCD’s, the Sony KDL-52XBR4 and the Sony KDL-52XBR5. The top of the line Sony LCD TVs are the XBR4 and XBR5 series, so why did we review 2 models at once? Well, Sony has made the XBR4 and XBR5 line the same except that the KDL-52XBR5 comes with piano black plates while the KDL-52XBR4 comes in detachable color plates. You can check out the different pictures here. It is of course a signature Sony to have the piano black look, so I’m positive many will be willing to pay the extra $300 for it. Sony did this before with the XBR2 and XBR3 series. It’s a nice marketing technique from Sony and just gives consumers a little more choice on how they want their LCD TVs to look like.

The aesthetics of the new Sony XBR4 and XBR5s are quite similar to the XBR2/3 with the floating glass bezel that Sony introduced last year. The big difference is the new 120 Hz support which provides better motion viewing especially when it comes to action and sports. All the major manufacturers’ are highlighting this major achievement and it looks great on both the Sony KDL-52XBR4 and the Sony KDL-52XBR5.

Sony KDL-52XBR5 - Side View

The Sony KDL-52XBR4 / KDL-52XBR5 produces an image that is 24p frames per second. Movies are originally filmed and mastered at 24 frames per second so these Sony LCDs try to take advantage of this feature when displaying the picture. Of course, the Sony’s are 1080P which was the buzz word last year.

The major features of the Sony XBR4/XBR5 are:

  • 1080P resolution with 1920x1080 display
  • 10 Bit processing
  • 120 Hz motion flow
  • 24 frames per second
  • 18,000 dynamic contrast ratio
  • 3 HDMI inputs

The Sony KDL-52XBR4 and Sony KDL-52XBR5 have again matched the competition when it comes to features and looks. The picture quality is clear and lifelike and really is one of the top performing displays in the market. With Sony LCDs, you will be paying a premium to own these units, but if you are into Sony’s styling and picture quality, the Sony KDL-52XBR4 and Sony KDL-52XBR5 should be on the top of your list.
