Sony KDL-52XBR9 Review
Sony’s KDL-52XBR9 presents a bold new step forward with the introduction of a built-in internet feature that does not require the purchase of additional add-ons, and allows consumers to experience online capabilities through their television set right out of the box. The KDL-52XBR9 is available in four different flavors: at 52 inches, 46 inches (KDL-46XBR9), 40 inches (KDL-40XBR9), and 32 (KDL-30XBR9)inches. By including an Ethernet connection as one of the set’s many features, Sony has opened the door for streaming access to a premium selection of content available from Sony’s BRAVIA service, which includes sites such as Amazon, Yahoo, and Youtube.
Previously, consumers were forced to use auxiliary devices in order to access streaming content on the internet. The disadvantages of these devices are obvious, as they not only required additional spending in the form of purchase and in many cases monthly fees, but also served to take up additional space. With the inclusion of a proprietary internet connection built right into the television set, getting online with the KDL-X52XBR9 is incredibly easy. I was able to connect an Ethernet cable to the set as soon as I took it out of the box, and before I knew it I was watching high-definition videos on Youtube in my living room without the need for a computer or third-party device.
The KDL-52XBR9 offers many improvements on Sony’s previous web-based LCD undertakings. The refresh rate is twice as fast, doubling from 120Hz to 240Hz. This is due to the new “MotionFlow” technology, which delivers an unparalleled image quality through accelerated frame rates and interpolation of three new frames. I was very impressed with the way that this set displayed quick motions in high definition media. The resolution is the industry standard of 1080p, and it’s never looked better. It also comes with a USB slot which can be used to display digital photography or video saved onto a USB drive directly on the LCD set.
Connections include the aforementioned USB port, as well as three HDMI inputs, composite inputs, and S-Video inputs. I would have preferred to have multiple USB inputs without the need for a USB splitter. The menu is navigated with Sony’s XrossMediaBar, also known as XMB. This menu is easily navigable and even includes an online version of TV Guide in order to make finding the shows you want to watch easy and painless. The KDL-52XBR9 is a complete pleasure to use, and Sony has really managed to create a winner with their latest innovation concerning out-of-the-box internet connectivity.
