Sony KDL-40Z5100 Review

The Z-series’ newest member, the Sony KDL- 52Z5100 is a great choice for the consumer trying to be a little more “green” in their electronics purchases.  This model has a bevy of features intended to reduce wasteful energy usage while still producing a great image quality.  Sony’s attempts to create an environmentally friendly LCD set should be celebrated by everyone regardless of their brand loyalty choice, and it is a precedent that should be followed by other manufacturers.   I’ve always felt a little guilty about having my television sets on at all hours of the day, and the methods employed by Sony designers to cut down on needless energy consumption through the use of LightSensor technology is something that should be explored by other manufacturers.

Though intended to reduce the carbon footprint of its users, the Sony KDL-52Z5100 does not skimp on features in order to make this possible.  Like Sony’s other recent high-definition LCD models, the latest Z-series features an Ethernet connection that allows online streaming and the usage of applications called “widgets”, which allow information to be delivered through BRAVIA Internet Video Link.  I found the internet installation process to be extremely easy, and the widgets are my favorite part of internet capability on this television set.

These “widgets” appear on-screen and are constantly updated with information such as financial market analysis, stock updates, the weather, and more.  They’re invaluable to have displayable when I’m not watching a news channel, as this type of information is never displayed on anything but news broadcast stations.  They can easily be toggled so that they do not block your screen at all times, and they can be quickly turned on and off in order to simply check something and return to viewing.  The large display on the Sony KDL-52Z5100 is more than enough room to have a few widgets displayed constantly without causing any major interference, however.

The Sony KDL-52Z5100 surpasses the requirements put forth by Energy Star 3.0 thanks to the use of LightSensor backlight control technology, which automatically adjusts the brightness of the set based on room brightness, greatly reducing energy consumption at times when having a set’s light shining at full power is unnecessary due to sunshine or house lights.

With a 1900x1080 resolution (1080p) display and 240Hz refresh rate, the Sony KDL-52Z5100 packs all of the punch of its competing sets while remaining an ecologically friendly alternative.  I would recommend this model to anyone in the market for a new television set regardless of whether or not they wish to “go green”, and the comfort of knowing that you’re helping the environment is simply icing on the cake.
